Liberation From Fate

with Dr Leslye Noyes, MDiv, PsyD

One Sunday a month: Jan 12, Feb 16, March 8, April 12, May 3, June 14, 2020

from 3:00pm to 5:00pm (except for Feb 16th which is 3:45pm to 5:45pm )

This six class series offers an in depth exploration of understanding unconscious processes in the individual and the collective. What is ‘the unconscious’? How is it understood differently by different traditions? Jung writes: “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”. How do we read unconscious processes through symbol and symptom? And how does a symbolic approach help us listen more deeply and offer understanding and care?

Students will learn some of the history and evolution of approaches to the unconscious. We begin with a study of shamanism, ancient mythology and religion. We make our way to the birth of formal psychology in Europe and America, including trauma, the pathogenic secret and hypnosis. We then study some of the last 100 years of psychological theory and method. Readings will include classical and contemporary texts to understand and evaluate the efficacy of any particular approach for promoting the psychosomatic health and unity of the individual.

Participants will read together the work of Jung, William James, Guntrip, Boisen, Tillich, Celani, Baring and Cashford, Bollas, John Bowlby and Eugene Taylor among others, in order to understand the evolution of theory behind contemporary psychodynamic and psychoanalytic clinical treatment. Students are encouraged to read classical and contemporary texts to understand and evaluate the clinical relevance and efficacy of any particular approach for promoting the psychosomatic health and unity of the individual. Students are encouraged to bring clinical or caregiving experiences, if possible, for discussion and exploration.
