Trauma and Paths to Liberation

with Dr. Leslye Noyes, MDiv, PsyD

Saturday, September 22nd, 2018 from 10:00am – 3:00pm

Join Dr. Leslye Noyes to explore how trauma affects us and, as caregivers, how we can support a return to trust, safety and well-being.

We will come to understand how trauma shapes experience, the body and nervous system as well as our fundamental sense of identity. Trauma compromises our capacity for contact, engagement, and freedom. Learning practical ways to work with trauma offers relief and a chance to be different.

Using research in the emerging field of trauma care and considering practical teachings, we will use two texts to support our inquiry: Bessel van der Kolk’s best-selling book: The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, and Judith Hermann’s Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence. Both texts address individual as well as collective elements of trauma and PTSD.

The course is designed to be didactic and experiential. Through group demonstrations and individual exercises, participants will learn to define, assess, and work with trauma in efficacious and comprehensive ways.

Joining Dr. Noyes this year is Karen Schwartz. Karen is a TCTSY-F (Certified Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator) and C-IAYT (certified yoga therapist) and she facilitates trauma sensitive yoga as an adjunct treatment for PTSD and complex trauma.
