Shadow Culture: Exploring the Relationship between the Individual and the Collective

Just as every individual organizes their sense of self through the lens of the ego– relegating to the shadows that which is unpleasant or abhorrent – mainstream culture exiles to the margins ways of thinking as well as whole groups of people deemed ‘worthless’ or less valuable than others.

Guided by Eugene Taylor’s book Shadow Culture, this course explores Jung’s notion of the personal and collective unconscious and examines the relationship between the two. Beginning with the mystics of the 1700s through the counterculture of the 1960s, Taylor outlines an American Visionary Tradition outside mainstream and institutional religion, science and education. This so-called ‘folk psychology’ is composed of individuals and communities that think and live alternatively.

By studying Shadow Culture, we are offered new ways to engage our inner life and deepen our experiential understanding of ourselves and one another. This history shows us that no matter how dark the mainstream gets, there are always those who think and live from a different orientation to what matters to us. By knowing this history, we are sustained and able to respond more compassionately to the moment we are in now.

This course is intended for practitioners and clinicians who want to understand the relationship between the personal and collective for themselves as well as offer that to others.

12 CE credits are awarded for both LMHC and LP license holders for 12 contact hours. Leslye Noyes, PsyD, LP, LMHC is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychoanalysts #P-0039 and licensed mental health counselors #MHC- 0174.

12 CE credits are also available for Social Workers through NYZCCC.

NOTE: Participants can only receive CE credits in one discipline - so, either Social Work or LMHC or LP.

Leslye Noyes, MDiv, LP, LMHC, PsyD, is a certified Jungian Analyst in private practice in New York City. Leslye sees individuals and couples and supervises therapists interested in learning how to work symbolically. She graduated from Union Theological Seminary and is an ordained UCC minister. She was awarded the Post. M.Div. Mission Fellowship from the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries.

Leslye is a certified Pastoral Counselor and a Fellow of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
